Wii

Wario Land: Shake It! may have given you the same initial assumptions I had before playing the game. Its gimmick sounding title smells of the gimmicky motion controlled games of which the Wii has been plagued. However, once you get your hands on this title, you'll realize that it's a glorified 2D platformer of great proportions. Featuring incredible looking graphics and a large amount of difficult gaming elements for the most hardcore of gamers, this is the type of core game that the current period of Wii gaming is lacking. I applaud Nintendo for this installment and am again hopeful for the traditional Wario series of games.

Videogames

Gameplay Classic 2D gameplay with a great mix of platforming and puzzling. Wii controls are also welcomed in their simplicity yet intuitiveness (aside from a hitch here or there).
Presentation The game looks absolutely beautfiuly in its hand drawn, highly animated 2D presentation. Music is also great with an expansive soundtrack and nice sounding midi. Story is purposefully shallow but it is presented in the crude nature of Wario games.
Value $49.99 is a little pricy for a glorified 2D platformer but it's still worth it for completionists/traditionalists. If you're looking to just play the game from start to finish, without attempting to finish quests or find secret levels, you may want to look elsewhere.
Fun Factor This game was a thrill to a 2D gamer such as myself. I miss the days when gaming wasn't overshadowed by gaudy graphics and the latest technological faux paux. This is some of the most enjoyable 2D gaming I've played to date.
Tilt This game is highly underrated. I feel some have found the beauty I've seen in this game but others have either overlooked it or don't appreciate the style of gameplay that made gaming so popular. This game is a great throwback in terms of current games as well as Wario titles and I loved every minute of it.

Tornado gets props for its unique gameplay and fairly polished presentation. Also, at $19.99, it's quite cheap for a DS title. However, if you are easily angered, this game might not be for you as the time based gameplay is sure to upset.

Videogames

Gameplay This game has enjoyably unique gameplay for the first several minutes of gaming but does little to build on the initial gameplay. Also, the time limits make the game more frustrating than playable.
Presentation The graphics include decent 3D and cute caricatures of the animal characters. Musically, the game succeeds with fairly catchy songs and some nice sound effects (to nullify the bad ones). However, this game's presentation lacks the most from its bulky menus and its uninspired characters. Also, the fact that the game brings you back to the title screen every time you lose doesn't help.
Value At $19.99, nearly any game can be a good value assuming it's a working game that's not terrible. Tornado is indeed a polished game that may be considered for purchase at this low price.
Fun Factor The game was enjoyable to me for the first couple of levels but the further I played the more frustrated I became. Some people might not be as annoyed by losing in this game but I absolutely despised the time limit/quest combinations.

PS2

Pipe Mania for the PS2 is a good game in terms of core gameplay but has a less intuitive control scheme than either the PC or DS versions of the game. Also, the load times are unbearable for such a simplistic set of graphics/sound/presentation. Multiplayer is the only feature that the DS version lacks so if you have a DS, this game is best played on it. For non-DS owners, the PC or PSP versions are your next-best bets. However, the PS2 version really has no features to make it stand out against its counterparts other than multiplayer (PSP & DS have portability, DS & PC have best controls, PSP, PC, and PS2 have multiplayer).

Videogames

Gameplay This version of the game has good controls but not as intuitive as that from a stylus or mouse. The biggest thorn in this game's gameplay score are the 10-15 second load times between every action on the menu. This makes the game hard to finish.
Presentation The PS2 version's graphics and sound aren't any different than those on the DS (what looks good on the DS is not even close to pixel pushing on the PS2). Also, the 2 screen presentation of the DS works best.
Value This game has better value than its DS counterpart as it includes a multiplayer mode and more levels at the same price of $19.99. Still not perfect in value though because it lacks a level editor and online gameplay.
Fun Factor I really liked the gameplay from Pipe Mania but I became very frustrated with the load times.
Tilt Still a great game.

Pipe Mania, though not appearing to be one of the better puzzlers out there just from looking at the box art, is really a rare diamond in the rough. This game provides all of the right combinations of gameplay and the right amount of gameplay (a lot) to give puzzle fans a great puzzling experience. A level editor and online play would be nice and the lack of multiplayer in the DS version is a shame but the DS version is still the definitive version of the game with its touch screen controls and portability.

Videogames

Gameplay This game features a slew of gameplay modes and lots of variation in the actual gameplay even from level to level. The DS & PC versions have the best controls featuring point and click placement. Only issue is the lack of multiplayer and levels in the DS version of the game
Presentation Since all of the versions pretty much look the same, the DS version deserves the highest score. Also, the two screen presentation is perfect for this game. Music doesn't annoy though sound effects do at times. Story is purposefully cheesy.
Value This game features the perfect combination of quality and quantity gameplay. Lack of multiplayer in the DS version and lack of level editors and multiplayer is a shame but $19.99 is still a great price for this puzzler.
Fun Factor I enjoyed the game for all the many hours I played it and I'm sure to continue playing in the future.

Prey the Stars is a nice attempt at simple, action based gameplay and though it doesn't strike home with its 1-player experience, multiplayer is the key interest in this game. Much like Bomberman's success from its multiplayer experience, Prey the Stars has a riveting, action packed multiplayer that's enjoyable both on local networks and over Nintendo Wi-Fi connection. If you have some friends with DS's or you would just like to try playing the game over the internet, you may want to look into this title. However, if you're just looking for an enjoyable 1-player experience, you may want to look elsewhere.

Videogames

Gameplay Prey the Stars is all about gameplay but the problem is that gameplay can get stale in 1-player mode. Multiplayer is where the game truly shines.
Presentation The game's presentation is perfectly fitting for the game. Nothing too flashy and a purposefully silly story make for above average presentation.
Value For the one player mode alone, $29.99 is a bit pricey. However, if you're in to play some multiplayer, the game is certainly worth its pricetag.
Fun Factor The one player mode is only fun for so long but the multiplayer can last for some time and is enjoyable throughout the experience.

Unsolved Mysteries is not one of the best crime titles on the DS but does have a few plusses here or there for the avid crime solver. Though hardcores may not be as interested in this game, the more casual crowd should enjoy it despite its deficiencies. Thriving from its sleuth based gameplay, Unsolved Mysteries loses most of its overall score from its mediocre presentation and at times sluggish gameplay. Also, at only around 10 or so hours of gameplay, its lack of replay value makes a $29.99 price point fairly high ($19.99 would have been much more reasonable, the current price of many of the Touch Generation DS titles). Somewhat recommended to the less hardcore crowd.

Videogames

Gameplay The game moves succeeds in being an average build with no major errors to the gameplay. However, the progression of the game feels forced and some of the mini games don't control smoothly. Also, it can be a little too easy at times.
Presentation The semi Cel-Shaded graphics look pretty good but aren't anything to write home about. Dialogue is fitting but with no voice acting, the overall presentation lacks. Also, the music is minimal, though good for the times that it does play.
Value At only around 10 or so hours of gameplay and no replay value, $29.99 is too pricy for what you get. $19.99 would be much more reasonable.
Fun Factor Though it wasn't thrilling at times, I still enjoyed the game enough to finish it. Maybe it's just my utter enjoyment of problem solving that made this game enjoyable.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen is yet another all star RPG to add to the already impressive lineup of RPGs on the DS. Featuring classic Dragon Quest gameplay and an overhaul of the game's presentation and interface, this is the defining version of the game to date. Though it is a bit of a port from the PSX version, it still reigns supreme to its console counterpart due to its portability alone. Impressive visuals, incredible soundtrack, and a lengthy, yet enjoyable storyline are what make Chapters of the Chosen a great choice for any RPG fan. Recommended.

Videogames

Gameplay This game features classic Dragon Quest gameplay and though it adds a few upgrades here or there, it always pays homage to the original hardcore format. Lack of touch screen controls is confusing though. Also, I disliked the money collecting final portion of Torneko's quest.
Presentation The game stays true to its roots with minimalistic battle sequences but provides an incredible updated musical score as well as some great looking 2D/3D graphics. Also, the story does a great job of outlining each character's specific role in the story. Menus are simplified in a good way.
Value The game provides around 40+ hours of gameplay but shies in comparison to the length of its predecessor, DQIII. Multiplayer is a nice addition but nothing particularly special. At $39.99, this game is worth the RPG fan's money
Fun Factor I loved the game specifically because I'm a hardcore RPG fan. This is the kind of game that makes older fans happy and can persuade newer gamers into becoming fans of the style of RPG.
Tilt The game is great, I mean It's Dragon Quest for Pete's sake.

Lock's Quest was one of the best games shown at E3 2008, surprising many gamers with one of the best looking original games on the DS since its release. And, despite a few control issues here or there, it most certainly succeeds in living up to the hype. I loved every minute of the game and am only saddened that the experience is already over. Hopefully a sequel is in the making because this game deserves to have more installments in the series. Recommended.

Videogames

Gameplay Lock's Quest has quite possibly the most unique and varied gameplays on the DS yet. There are a few control quirks here or there but other than that, the game succeeds in providing a truly innovative form of gaming.
Presentation Lock's Quest has bright visuals and animations that trade appearance for framerate. The sountrack is notably epic but the instruments used are a little too midi-sounding. The story is enjoyable but nothing too special.
Value The game is worth the $29.99 merely for the experience of its gameplay alone. A 20 hour adventure is a little above average and the multiplayer experience is enjoyable. However, replay value is low considering that finishing the game earns you nothing.
Fun Factor I enjoyed the game thoroughly throughout the adventure. This is by far the closest thing to an RTS on the DS to date.

King's Bounty is a fully fledged RPG experience with highly executed strategy elements to boot. It is very similar to the Heroes of Might & Magic series (because both series were created by the same developer and mastermind) but it separates itself by providing real time movement and deeper character building. Visuals and Sound are top notch and well surpass the problems with story development and translation issues. Overall, the game is a great addition to the world of PC strategy gaming and succeeds in being a great remake of an 18 year old game.

Videogames

Gameplay King's Bounty offers a large amount of strategy/RPG gameplay from turn based battles to complete character customization. Its mechanics are very similar to those of the Heroes of Might & Magic series but always in good ways.
Presentation The game's visuals are both beautiful and manageable for most any mid-range video card. The soundtrack provides a plethora of epic music but there is little voice acting. Also, the story is not very developed and there are key translation issues.
Value At $39.99, King's bounty provides an expansive amount of gameplay and replay value to be worth this reasonable pricetag. The inability to have multiplayer is the only problem (Heroes has a similar format as well as an unparalleled multiplayer experience)
Fun Factor I enjoyed the game thoroughly.
Tilt This is a great game. It is worthy of being a remake to the original game and succeeds in separating itself enough while also having the right parallels to Heroes of Might & Magic to create a great game.

Tales of Symphonia is the best traditional RPG on an XBox system to date. With beautiful visuals, charming characters, a deep combat system, and 50+ hours of gameplay, this is the full package when it comes to RPGs. The XBox is finally beginning to see the RPG support it has needed for the past 7 years.

Videogames

Gameplay The gameplay has been refined to the utmost perfection in terms of Tales games. All of the best features from previous games plus additional polish makes this game easy to pick up and fun throughout your adventure.
Presentation The game looks beautiful from beginning to end and though it doesn't push the systems graphics to the limit, it still looks stunning. Voice acting is equally as impressive and the musical score is great. Only complaint is the lack of fully orchestrated music.
Value $59.99 is fair game for a 360 title so considering that this game is 50+ hours and that RPGs are typically longer than other games, this game is worth any RPG fan's money.
Fun Factor I enjoyed the game thoughout and fell in love with the overly expressive anime characters. My biggest complaint was the repetitive combat sequences but this is spiced up when played with up to 3 other friends in co-op.
