Good one to watch early in the New Year, when you’re already thinking about changes you might make in your life.

Movies

The Film/Show Solid acting lifts a predictable story
Presentation Nothing flashy, but, for a change, you can actually read the onscreen menus
Extra Features Good to know that even successful Hollywood types can’t get everything they want when they want it!

Burn After Reading is very funny. While the characters are entertaining, none of them is particularly likable (except Jenkins’ character), so it’s hard to get very upset when they get their comeuppance. Just sit back and enjoy watching some terrific actors play characters quite different from what they usually do, except when they’ve been in another Coen film.

Movies

The Film/Show Hard to beat this cast
Presentation Disappointing both for what’s there and what isn’t
Extra Features All looks great, and, for a change, the onscreen menus are actually legible without a magnifying glass

Mamma Mia! is great fun. I’m sure it helps if you’re a fan of ABBA’s music, but, if you’re not, you’re probably not going to watch this anyway. I defy you to watch “Dancing Queen” without getting up and dancing yourself! And, if you get caught up in the story enough, you can almost overlook poor Pierce’s singing. Here’s the cure: Turn on that sing-along option, and belt ‘em out loud enough to drown him out. You know you want to. (And I really don’t think he’d mind.)

I’m still true to Narnia, but Prince Caspian doesn’t quite live up to the promise of Lion. It’s still well worth watching, there’s just less of an emotional draw than the first picture. The fidelity to the book still has me looking forward to the next installment. Adamson and company are in pre-production now on The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the next in the series … here’s hoping for more story and less action. (Adamson is producer, but Michael Apted will direct.)

This Christmas is very predictable, and the story has a lot of holes and plot lines that aren’t really resolved. (For example, everyone’s shocked that Claude’s mystery woman turns out to be his wife, and that she’s white, and that she’s six weeks pregnant. But they’re all nice to her very quickly, and we never get to see her let Claude know about the baby. And why are Quentin’s bad guys back again at the end? Just so they can dance?) But the performances and the music make it worth watching. It probably won’t be the first Christmas chestnut you pull out every year, but it’s likely one you’ll make some time for when you’re trying to find some peace within the bustle of the season.

Sweeney Todd has long been a theatrical marvel, and it certainly deserved a film that would like up to the music and story. Burton’s done it, with a big, big assist from Depp. If you’re a fan of the theatrical version who avoided the film, run and get a copy and sit back to admire. If you’ve never seen it, you need to.

Eastern Promises is as dark as its setting. It’s profoundly sad, but also a terrific piece of filmmaking. Mortensen received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his work, and when you watch this, you’ll understand why.

Movies

The Film/Show If there wasn’t so much human depravity on display, I’d go even higher.
Presentation Predictable menus, but nothing boring, either.
Extra Features I don’t usually wish for commentary tracks, but I did here. I would have liked to have heard from both Cronenberg and Mortensen on some of the choices made in the film.

I really enjoyed this film, and kudos to Schwimmer for the pacing, because that’s a big part of what makes it work. If you missed this in the theater, it’s definitely worth getting and watching.

These are a fun look back, and a great boon for early musical buffs. The Gold Diggers of 1937 disc includes a couple of scenes from a 1920s Busby Berkeley gold diggers musical that were found relatively recently and carefully remastered, and that’s interesting to watch, too. If you think you were born too late, here’s a very good way to spend some time back in the past.
