One reviewer described this series as "sumptuous". I think that's about the best way to sum it up--too much of it is probably a bad thing, but it's great to enjoy in moderation.

Movies

The Film/Show Just...yummy. You'll get it when you see it.
Presentation Straightforward.
Extra Features A good way to check out other Showtime series.

If you love this genre, The Duchess is definitely worth a watch. I think I would've hated this movie as a teenager, because it's not all about fairy-tale, happily ever after, and love. It deals with sacrifice and compromise and I'm learning a little bit about that myself. It's always a good reminder, too, that those who seem to have it all have secret (or not-so-secret) lives that don't jive (did I just say jive?) with the public display.

I was really surprised by how much I liked this film, and glad for the chance to discover a classic. It's amazing how relevant the themes are to 21st century Hollywood, even though so much has changed with the advent of new technology. All of you film students out there, it just goes to show you, there's no substitute for a well-written story that's well-executed! Universal themes in Sunset Boulevard allow a film that is really a criticism of the worst of golden age Hollywood to be relatable to the average viewer.

Just what you'd expect from a re-release of the film's DVD, though the movie itself should already be a part of every American's film log.

I enjoyed this movie the way I'd enjoy a Saturday morning cartoon, which is appropriate, given the target audience. Thrown for a loop by the difference in my expectations and how the movie actually played out, I had to adjust my ideas about the film, but I appreciated McAvoy's performance and the quirky feel of the story, even while reaffirming that I moved far beyond such plots long ago.

Jericho was easy to watch for the first season and was thought-provoking, too, especially given the political and global nuclear climate. I was always ready to watch a couple of episodes at a time and was impressed that it was a CBS offering as well. The quality of the first season made the lack of follow-through of the second even more disappointing, but at least I wasn't as sad when I finished the series. I look forward to seeing what else comes from this production team.

Movies

This smooth little show was fun to have an excuse to watch; otherwise, I probably would never have made the time. It was nice to see Gabrielle Anwar back and looking good after I watched her in Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken as a child. I liked the feel of it enough that I'll probably watch it again next season. Glad to see the basic cable networks putting out watchable stuff.

This movie was just plain BAD. The story was forced and trite, the effects distracted from the production rather than enhancing it, and from the opening scenes, it was difficult to keep this reviewer's attention. That's a rough way to start a nearly 2-hour movie. In a survey of 5 others who'd seen it, no one had anything positive to say--except "That actress is really pretty underneath those dreadlocks." Enough said.
