GI Joe video games are few and far between. The last one I played was Konami's GI Joe arcade back in '92, and what a fun game that was (is, actually). Now, as Hollywood is set to release the first live action Joe film, developer Double Helix and publisher EA have teamed up to produce the video game based on the movie. It's hard not to roll your eyes at video games based on movies, given their shaky past and cash-in nature, but, as Raven Software proved again with their incredible X-Men Origins: Wolverine game, video games based on movies aren't all bad. On that note, while not as wholly impressive as Wolverine, GI Joe: Rise of Cobra (GI Joe RoC) is still a really fun movie-video game that is at least worth a rental.

GI Joe: Rise of Cobra on the 360 surprised me. Gameplay is somewhat similar to Konami's old arcade title that has players running and gunning against dozens of Cobra foes. One major point about the game is that it's actually quite different from the movie. EA was given permission from Hasbro to be liberal with their license, and EA has done exactly that. About a dozen characters are available in the game, including Firefly, Snake Eyes, Scarlett, Duke, Gung Ho, Heavy Duty, Agent Helix, Sgt. Flash, and a few others. Each character has something unique about them in how they can fight against Cobra.
Players are able to take on Cobra themselves, or with a friend via same-screen play. Players can also drop in and out during a mission, too. Different combinations of characters can team up to create different attacks; during the demo play, we used Sgt. Flash's shockwave stun attack along with Kamakura's blades to quickly kill several enemies.
Controls are basic, but great for quick play and accessibility. You can change your targeted enemy by flicking the right thumbstick. Characters also have (grenade throw for Duke, stun attack for Flash, etc) and can also earn a powerful...

G.I. Joe
Well, wouldn't you know it? With every major action movie release, a video game is generally just right around the corner. And this time, it's EA who's scored the license; we'll see the game this summer.
Here's the scoop:
Storyline picks up where the movie leaves off
Allows players to "re-create and re-live the greatest moments from the film, cartoon series and action figure toy line" (such as, we suppose, when Super Joe's arm popped off... oh, Super Joe)
12 characters, each with unique abilities and weapons
Single-screen two-player co-op mode
Hey, at least EA acknowledges up front that the series is all about "over-the-top" action—maybe we'll see a game with just the right balance of attitude.
