Garmin nuvi... dead?

Reports have begun to surface (read: erupt) that the latest GPS update for the Garmin nüvi 7x5 series of GPS navigation devices is bricking the units.

Many users report having plugged in their GPS to their computers to receive a mysterious “GPS Chipset Type M” update, which seemed to do nothing. Then, days later (nearly all of them yesterday, June 22, 2009), their units prompted them to perform a “GPS Update” in the middle of driving. Following that brief process, the unit is then no longer able to acquire satellites, and eventually will not even turn on.

At first the issue seemed to be limited to the 765T device, but later reports confirm that at least a few 785T and even 755T devices were also affected. Now it is speculated that the problem may be specific to the MediaTek chipset used in these specific units.

No one currently knows how widespread the problem is, but judging by the cascading horror stories on such enthusiast websites as GPSReview and GPSPassion, it certainly doesn’t look good at the moment for Garmin.

A report from one user summarizing the experience:

A little before 8 pm ET on Monday, June 22, 2009 while driving in my car a message appeared on my 765T stating: "Updating GPS software". I waited until it was done and then pressed OK. The 765T then began "Searching for Satellites". I arrived at my destination with the 765T still "Searching for Satellites". I parked my car, turned off the 765T and went to my meeting.

About an hour later I got back into my car and the 765T would not power up. I have spent most of the evening trying to get the 765T to power up. I have plugged it into my computer via the USB cable. I have plugged it into the AC charger. I have held the on switch in the on position numerous times for 10 seconds, 15 seconds, 60 seconds. I've tried turning it on while pressing on the lower right corner of the screen. Nothing has worked.

The 765T will not power on.

Coincidence? I don't think so.

P.S. I do not have MSN.

Your humble editor just purchased a 755T last week, and even after having updated it, I have not yet experienced the issue (you can hear me knocking on wood through your computer monitor).

Another user points to this interesting (coincidental?) report, though it seems likely to be unrelated:

A software bug resident in a wide range of multi-mode GPS receivers (MMR) built by Rockwell Collins could cause datalink and other problems during the chronological transition from 20 to 21 June, cautions the European Aviation Safety Agency.

Garmin has reportedly corresponded with many users about sending their units in for RMA, but at the shipping expense of the customer.

Have you experienced this issue? Let us know in the comments your story, including your unit model number, and we’ll update our article as the day continues and more information becomes available.

UPDATE (1:01 PM EST):

It seems possible that V8 units do not exhibit this behavior.  You can find your unit version (at your own risk) by entering the diagnostics screen on your device.  To do this, press and hold your finger over the time in the upper-right corner of the device for several seconds.  Then, reference the top line of text on the screen.  Note the number after the letter "V": "7" or "8".

To this end, we want to know if you own a V8 unit and have experienced the problem.  If so, please tell us in the comments section below! Your participation will help us all get to the bottom of this issue.

UPDATE (JUNE 25):

Also, thanks to Billy in the comments section below!

Garmin has released an official statement on the matter, as well as a solution/corrected firmware:

Today, Garmin released a free, mandatory GPS software update to correct a software issue that has been discovered to cause the nuvi 7x5 devices to repeatedly attempt to update GPS firmware, and then either shut down or no longer acquire GPS satellite signals.

Garmin nüvi 7x5 series products that are no longer able to acquire a GPS satellite signal may download a firmware update immediately that will correct the software issue. This firmware update may be downloaded using Garmin's WebUpdater program.

Garmin nüvi 7x5 customers who are no longer able to power on their GPS device will need to visit www.garmin.com/support, and select the first FAQ titled "My nüvi 755T, 765T, 775T or 785T is giving me the message 'Updating GPS Firmware' or will no longer power on..." Customers will then need to follow the instructions to request a return authorization so that the device may be repaired under warranty.

We know our customers rely upon their Garmin GPS device(s), especially during the summer travel season, and we regret any inconvenience this situation may have caused. We are committed to developing products that are known for their quality and reliability and will continue to work diligently to earn the trust of our customers.

Another one dead!!!
My 765t died too!! I used it yesterday afternoon 6-22-09, and worked fine. Last night I had it inside...just running off battery (which had plenty of juice)... was entering in addresses to save as favorites for an upcoming trip on Wed., when I got a message pop-up and say updating GPS firmware..then update completed. It did this 5 or so times, then shutoff. I cannot power it on..I cannot hard-reset it...I plugged it into my beanbag mount in the truck, and normally it turns on automatically, but nothing!! FYI..I use the MSN receiver power adapter. I have had the latest firmware and the latest maps since they were released. I did not update the recent voice updates yet. This is a referb unit, because my first one died also. I am getting very frustrated and worried, because the referbs are only covered under warranty until the original 1 year warranty expires. This means another referb, and only 7 month warranty!!

I am currently working on getting in touch with Garmin...
This situation is looking pretty serious as of now. Who knows how many units possibly have been affected in the past 24 hours...

If you don't mind my asking, Alicia, how long was it before this first occurred? Is your trip to work long?

Also, did you receive the "GPS Update" message this morning, or previously?

Reportedly if you can get your unit to turn on there are a couple of files you can try renaming to make it work again... temporarily, or so it seems.

Thanks for the input!

Garmin Has Released a Firmware Fix Today!
Hey everyone! Looks like Garmin has come through with a fix; just in time too! I've posted a link below which speak directly to Garmin's ability to quickly provide a fix for these issues. The issue where the device would read "Updating GPS Firmware" has been resolved with an update to the devices firmware.

According their support site

Question: My nuvi 755T, 765T, 77T or 785T is giving me the message "Updating GPS Firmware" or will no longer power on after receiving this message....

Answer: If your device is repeating the message "Updating GPS firmware" or "GPS Update Complete", a software update is now available for you to update your device to correct this issue. Please use our Webupdater program to install this update onto your device.

Note - the issue where the device will not POWER ON...requires an exchange of the device. Click on the link below for more information.

I just updated my 755T - No longer having the issue!

I love my Garmin!

--It appears Garmin is receiving a lot of bad press because of this issue. People have to understand that software / firmware can contain bugs. Bugs can be fixed! How many times have you had issues with your mobile phone or Windows XP? Software updates come out to fix these issues and enhance the product. Garmin has done an excellent job with quickly releasing an update for this issue. I don't recall ever having an issue like this...I've had three different Nuvi's (starting with the Nuvi 350).

Also check out Garmin's recent blog post on the issue...

Another dead 755T
I bought my unit in April from Amazon USA, updated the maps and software in early June and used the unit happily in Norway last week. On Friday the 20th in the UK, it kept having trouble acquiring satelites. On Sunday the 21st in Germany, I turned it back on and while it was acquiring satelites again, it died. Permenently. Like the other reports, no reset or charging scenario will work and it must be returned and replaced.

I work for a software company. And we get bugs, but we also do a lot of quality control work to ensure that any bugs that might slip through should be of 'low criticality'. Killing hardware permenantly is a really big quality screw-up that should not have happend.

Also, when a company has a really big screw up, I expect them to go out of the way to make it up to the customer. This will already cost them a bundle. I offered to pay shipping for them to fast/overnight ship me a replacment and they won't help. I spent more then $500 on the unit, plus 10 hours to upgrade it, plus $90 in cell charges from Europe to figure out what is wrong, plus $80 to have a nav system in my rented car here and even when I offer to pay them to ship me a new unit fast, they don't care.

They just missed a low cost opportunity to change an upset customer into a customer for life through good service.

If you think that quality and customer care issues were a big part of the American auto industry demise, then this set of events does not bode well for Garmin, or its stockholders.

Mine 765T is dead too
My unit bought on late April this year became dead too on June 23, 2009 within exactly the same circumstances. It started displaying the "GPS Updated" message on my way on June 22, 2009 around 08:00 CET, following which it could not any longer acquire sattelite information. After switching off and on again it worked for a while normally, and then the process started again. After several cycles the screen became black and I could never start up the unit again. I wonder what would be the outcome and how long it will take to get back a fully functional unit. Holiday is coming...

I found a fix on another forum...
Method to disassemble:
1. Remove the two small torx screws on the back of the unit (this is where you need your toolbox of everything!)
2. Run finger round edge, pulling the back off as you can. Try not to pull too hard (don't want to break it) and be aware that the battery and speaker are attached to the back (so don't yank it away when it finally comes off
3. Unplug battery
4. Leave for a second or two
5. Plug battery back in
6. Push back cover on
7. Replaces screws
8. ???
9. Update!

I can't see any warranty stickers, and the build quality is solid (nicely designed as well). So if you don't wanna wait 2 weeks for a warranty replacement (they're gonna do EXACTLY the same thing after shipping it to them), just try the method above. Try not to damage the case, but it *SHOULD* resurrect your device.

hands on fix
I can confirm that unplugging the battery for a few seconds does work. I have done so on 3 nuvis and it worked every time. It's not the easiest thing to open but if you are comfortable doing so, it will save you a ton of grief. The other option i suspect is to leave the nuvi alone and let the battery die. This may not take as long as you might think since the software is in a loop and likely putting a strain on the battery. Once the nuvi is dead, it should power on when connected to the pc. At that point, run the webupdater to get the new firmware.

Another Dead 755T
I got my nuvi 755T last fall and just updated it, nuLifeTime 2010 map software on 6/22/09. Today, 6/29/09, I went on a trip and I started getting the dreaded messages about updating firmware etc., plus it intermittently started losing satellites. By the time I got home a few hours later I could not even power it up. I called Garmin, and while on hold they put a recording on about the problem and to go to there site. Of course the site told about the update that would fix the problem, unfortunately, I will have to send my in.

That sucks!
Mine seems to have been exempted; perhaps based on the fact that it's a "V8" device (revealed by the diagnostics screen). Nevertheless, I updated my firmware anyway just to be certain, as I have a cross-country trip next week I will be undertaking with my wife. Had I held out we might be able to empirically investigate the odds of such symptoms occurring on a device with the V8 chipset, but in the face of the circumstances, alas, we'll just have to keep on wondering. :)

Love the device though, aside from just a few glaring negatives:

1) Routing performance and ETA is notably below that of newer TomTom devices featuring the brilliant IQ Routes.

2) No way to avoid a road is just plain stupid IMO.

3) Detour option is massively dumb-ified (come on Garmin, seriously now).

4) Current road name is not displayed on map view.

5) Touch screen is rigid, inaccurate, and just overall of low quality.

Apart from that, it's a pleasantly polished device, and I'm quite happy with the lifetime map updates arrangement.

Hey the unplugging the battery fix worked for me as well. Saved me from having to send it back to the factory. I had problems opening the case at first until i found a video on youtube about replacing the battery in the nuvi. IT showed me how to open it using a torx and a blunt piece of plastic. you should search for that video if you are planning on doing it yourself. very helpful once you see someone else do it you know what you are working with.

Just updated my new nuvi755t
Actually it's my second nuvi 755t. The first one died after one day's use(wouldn't power up). This happened about 3 weeks ago. I sent it back to the retailer, who sent me a new unit. After charging the battery I downloaded the Garmin webupdater and updated the firmware to v3.60. Upon hitting the "next" button, I was given a list of further updates to check and install. They included a whole bunch of voice updates, GPS chipset type M, nuvi help and translation files, etc. I have not as yet downloaded them. Should I?
